Blacks Law Dictionary 2nd Ed. What is NEW DEAL? Economic policies that President Franklin D. Roosevelt introduced as a series of programs after the Great Depression left the U.S. economy utterly wasted. His programs provided help to millions of Americans stuck in a state of poverty. Rolled out over five years (1933-1938), these programs covered labor, bank, and relief reforms as an example. Roosevelt’s New Deal had many opponents who saw these implemented programs building power held by the government, promoting capitalism. As World War II engulfed the US, men became soldiers and women took over jobs previously held by the men. These programs essentially became unnecessary as GNP and unemployment rates drastically improved. What is POLL? A survey conducted in order to determine the opinion of the public, and how it feels regarding a certain event/ person, etc. What is GOVERNMENT? 1. The regulation, restraint, supervision, or control which is exercised upon the individual members of an organized jural society by those investedwith the supreme political authority, for the good and welfare of the body politic; or the act of exercising supreme political power or control.2. The system of polity in a state; that form of fundamental rules and principles bywhich a nation or state is governed, or by which individual members of a body politicare to regulate their social actions; a constitution, either written or unwritten, by whichthe rights and duties of citizens and public officers are prescribed and defined, as amonarchical government, a republican government, etc. Webster.3. An empire, kingdom, state or independent political community; as in the phrase,”Compacts between independent governments.”4. The sovereign or supreme power in a state or nation.5. The machinery by which the sovereign power in a state expresses its will andexercises its functions; or the framework of political institutions, departments, andoffices, by means of which the executive, judicial, legislative, and administrativebusiness of the state Is carried on.6. The whole class or body of office-holders or functionaries considered in theaggregate, upon whom devolves the executive, judicial, legislative, and administrativebusiness of the state.7. In a colloquial sense, the United States or its representatives, considered as theprosecutor in a criminal action ; as in the phrase, “the government objects to the witness.” What is DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA? A territory situated on the Potomac river, and being theseat of government of the United States. It was originally ten miles square, and wascomposed of portions of Maryland and Virginia ceded by those states to the UnitedStates; but in 1846 the tract coming from Virginia was retroeeded. Legally it is neither astate nor a territory, but is made subject, by the constitution, to the exclusive jurisdictionof congress. What is EXECUTIVE? A level of high, exclusive management accountability in an organization. Bounded, scoped, authorized ability to make decision for all or part of the organization.
