Blast pressure wave 16. Off coast of Qui Nhon in support of 28th Regiment, White Horse Division. October 1968. When an explosive charge is detonated, very hot, expanding gases are formed in a period of microseconds. These gases exert pressures of about 700 tons per square inch on the atmosphere surrounding the point of detonation and rush away from the point of detonation at velocities of up to 7,000 miles per hour, thus compressing the surrounding air.
