Blue Bomber Blogger: Bomber Blessings on Thanksgiving By Chad Wassing Its Thankgiving weekend. A time to gather with friends and family, to reflect on the past, and think about the present and the future. To eat ham, turkey, tofurkey, or whatever you want. Most importantly, its a time to give thanks for the blessings in our lives. Personally, Ive got an awful lot to be thankful for. Ive got a roof over my head, a loving family, great friends, and a good job that I complain about more than I should. Ive got shoes that fit, clothes that keep me warm, and a lawn mower that starts on the first pull. Ive got a dog that only chews the kids things and leaves mine alone, and neighbours that dont mind when the dog barks a few too many times. So, maybe its a bit odd that I take some time out of my Thanksgiving weekend to reflect on the Blue Bombers, but this is my space, so youll have to indulge me: Im thankful for gamedays. For the anticipation that builds all day. For the familiar faces, whether we know each other by name or just by jersey number. For the same old jokes and the same old traditions. Im thankful for the numbers 1, 6, 11, 21, 63, 85, 97, and the trio of 34, 35 and 58. Im thankful that most Bomber fans will know exactly who Im talking about without having to spell it out. Im thankful for the pre-game anthem. The song that binds us as a nation also sets our brand of football apart from all others. It, and we, are Canadian, and we should celebrate it every chance we get. Im thankful for Obby Khans comeback in 2008, and his famous shawarma. Both prove the value of hard work and perserverence. Im thankful for cold beverages during a hot game and even colder beverages during a chilly game. And Im especially thankful for those who know when to say enough and designated drivers for those who choose not to. Im thankful I saw Milt Stegall go 100 yards untouched to beat the Eskimos, and that one of the few autographs I have saved is his. That signature is on my ticket stub from the game Milt broke the CFL record for touchdowns, and it makes it even more special. Im thankful for the old Winnipeg Stadium, believe it or not. It may have been a dump, but it was our dump. Im even more thankful for Investors Group Field, which is a beautiful place to watch a game and a worthy home for our Big Blue. Im thankful for 1984, 1988, and 1990. I am also thanful for 1992, 1993, 2001, 2007 and 2011, just a little less so. Again, you know what Im talking about. Im thankful for the voice of the Blue Bombers on CJOB, Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Irving. Knuckles is one of the best the business has ever seen, hes smart, fair, and unbiased. Hes likely to retire in the next couple of years after decades of calling games, and we will all be poorer for his absence. Im thankful that after some trying times, our club looks to be on the right path. Im thankful that my wife, Heather, loves blue Bomber football as much as I do. We look forward to sharing our passion with our kids, and hope they will love the team like we do. Im thankful for all the ex-Bombers who embraced their time in Winnipeg and made it their home. And lastly, Im thankful for the opportunity to blog and to share my thoughts with all of you, the Blue Bomber faithful. Thanks for reading. Go Blue!
