Blue Jasmine (2013) Plot: After everything in her life falls to pieces, including her marriage to wealthy businessman Hal (Alec Baldwin), elegant New York socialite Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) moves into her sister Gingers (Sally Hawkins) modest apartment in San Francisco to try to pull herself back together again. Jasmine arrives in San Francisco in a fragile mental state, her head reeling from the cocktail of anti-depressants shes on. While still able to project her aristocratic bearing, Jasmine is emotionally precarious and lacks any practical ability to support herself. She disapproves of Gingers boyfriend Chili (Bobby Cannavale), who she considers another loser like Gingers ex-husband Augie (Andrew Dice Clay). Ginger, recognizing but not fully understanding her sisters psychological instability, suggests that she pursue interior design, a career she correctly intuits that Jasmine wont feel is beneath her. In the meantime, Jasmine begrudgingly accepts work as the receptionist in a dentists office, where she attracts the unwanted attentions of her boss, Dr. Flicker (Michael Stuhlbarg). Feeling that her sister might be right about her poor taste in men, Ginger starts seeing Al (Louis C.K.), a sound engineer whom she considers as a step up from Chili. Jasmine sees a potential lifeline when she meets Dwight (Peter Sarsgaard), a diplomat who is quickly smitten with her beauty, sophistication and style. Jasmines flaw is that she derives her worth from the way shes perceived by others, while she herself is blind to what is going around her. Delicately portrayed by a regal Cate Blanchett, Jasmine earns our compassion because she is the unwitting instrument of her own downfall. Woody Allens new drama Blue Jasmine is about the dire consequences that can result when people avert their eyes from reality and the truth they dont want to see. Review: Im not the biggest Woody Allen fan, so I wasnt expecting to enjoy this movie that much. Whilst watching it I started to get bored with the plot and the whole back and forth from past to present. Woody Allen has a way of trying to put as many words into a movie as possible, so I also got fed up with the constant chatting about rubbish. The saviour of the movie was Cate Blanchett and her brilliant acting. The way that she deals with the break-up with Alec Baldwin was very well played, especially the way that she handles dealing with the real world after living the high life. The movie isnt an all time classic, but the acting is brilliant. Watchable! Round-Up: This is yet another side to Cate Blanchett who can rise to any project. Its good to see a more jokey side to her acting because she usually plays serious roles like in Babel or Benjamin Button. Alec Baldwin is always a joy to watch and he played a great part in this movie. Im glad that Woody Allen didnt do a straight out comedy, although there is a lot of wit in the movie, but there is a serious backdrop. He really does bring the best out of actors but I just dont really like the way that he tells a story. Budget: N/A Worldwide Gross: $96million I recommend this movie to people who are into there witty dramas about a woman going through a nervous breakdown after leaving her husband. 5/10
