Bob Jauch to Citizens Concerned about the proposed Penokee Mine: "predictable outcome during Senate Mining committte with a 3-2 vote in favor of closing 3500 acres of land and Gogebic Taconite the authority to determine what is open and closed for public access. It is interesting that Senator Grothman expressed some hesitancy on the bill suggesting that future compromise may be necessary. Senator Tiffany and Senator Darling were offended when I criticized the GOP for showing contempt to the public by rushing this bill, holding a sham hearing and being a shill for one company that continually demonstrates incompetence and insensitivity to their neighbors and citizens of Wisconsin. The bill now goes to the Senate but it is uncertain as to whether the full Senate will take the bill up on September 17 or wait until October when the Assembly and Senate meet for the fall session. the committee rejected an amendment offered by Senator Lehman and I that wouild have provided safety zones around specific work sites. Our proposal might have restricted access for safety reasons around 50 acres but it is clear that this company wants to close as much of the 3500 acres as possible. the public must continue to press personal letters and calls to their elected officials to influence the discussion."
