Boko Haram; A Monster Brand It was a gruesome sight to behold. A video showing suspected members of the Boko Haram sect decapitating a woman, who was accused of being an SSS officer, went viral on social media recently. Despite the chest-thumping press releases by the Nigeria Army of being on the verge of completely wiping out the menace of the dreaded Islamic sect, the attacks on Benisheikh and Yobe, which left hundreds dead and many more displaced and injured has once again highlighted the fact that this hydra-headed insurgency would not just go away. It has so far defied both diplomatic and military solutions. Nigerians have become war-weary, unaware of where next this violent group would strike again. Guerrilla warfare is one which is unwinnable, as can be deduced from history. From the FARC Rebels in Columbia to the Basque ETA Separatists in Spain to the Al-Shabaab sect in Somalia to the Hamas in the Middle East to the globally infamous Al-Qaeda, large regular armies have found to their chagrin that fighting a war against a militia outfit is often draining in terms of manpower and materials. Poser; what can be done to end this menace of armed insurgency, once and for all?
