Bombay HC calls BCCI panel illegal, calls for new probe. The Bombay High Court has struck down the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s probe and has asked the body to form a new panel. The decision came in response to a PIL filed by the Bihar and Jharkhand cricket associations. The High Court had also said that the panel was illegal and unconstitutional, asking how a board could probe itself. It had also said that there was disparity in the evidence collected by the panel. Of course this development comes as a massive blow to N Srinivasan, Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, who were given clean chits by the probe panel before the Mumbai or Delhi police could make any conclusion or even file a chargesheet in the case. The BCCI’s two-member internal probe panel, comprising former judges T Jayaram Chouta and R Balasubramanian, submitted their report on the IPL spot-fixing scandal on Saturday, 27 July. Srinivasan’s chances of a return have taken a huge hit. After the clean chit, it was widely expected that Srinivasan would return to the helm of the BCCI and take charge of the working committee meeting on 2 August. He had stepped down temporarily from his position after the IPL spot-fixing scandal. The panel originally comprised three-members, but BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale opted out following widespread criticism of the board’s handling of the corruption and spor-fixing issues in the IPL. Justice T Jayaram Chouta, one of the two High Court judges on the panel, had then said the commission would now not be able to function because one of its members had resigned. However, they still came up with a report that exonerated everyone of spot-fixing or match-fixing charges. The betting charges remained. Reports say that the BCCI is likely to move the Supreme Court now.
