Route Type: Point to point Think of this route as a tale of two cities, both easy going and painless to deal with, one a commercial hub and the other an older administrative cousin. You may find the first 15 kilometres easy as you leave the metropolis behind you. This is the ‘Down Run’ but beware there is work to be done before you see the Capital’s skyline. The Jukskei Valley presents itself as the unmistakable landmark in this tale of the cities. Guarding the boerewors curtain the climbing becomes uncompromising, welcome to Midrand. The hill goes on for over six kilometres as you ascend more than 100 metres in that demanding passage passing the Woodmead Shopping Complex and Vodacom Golf Park. Once past Grand Central Airport the route yields a pleasant downhill run to the halfway mark. Onward you run to the South African Mint as you take on the race’s second testing climb. The toil is done and dusted at around 32 kilometres as you pound your way over the freeway. The run through Rooihuiskraal is pleasant enough but be careful not to lose your wits as the final climb at around the 45 kilometre marker is tough and will punish any early indiscretion. The final stretch is easy and satisfying as you run towards the green of the rugby club. City2City Ultra Marathon Prizes and Give-Aways: T-shirts and medals go to all finishers. Course Records: Name Time Year Men Bethuel Netshifhefhe 02:45:41 2006 Women F. vd Merwe 03:04:30 1989 Editors Notes: This race has changed in many ways since its dusty beginnings on a road that connected two cities that have very contrasting approaches to South African life. On 15 July 1903 at 08h00, the first City-to-City race took place. There was great local interest in the event. If all one hears is true, wrote one journalist the night before the inaugural race, half of Johannesburg will be going over to Pretoria with the competitors. Lord Milner was in attendance, and at 08h00 sharp, he lowered a flag. The race began to a great cheer. There were 36 starters. While there are many other famous winners of an inaugural race history records the winner of the first Stock Exchange Go As You Please as Mr Exton. His time was 05:55:02. The earlier City-to-City marathons were run between the Johannesburg and Pretoria City Halls on the untarred Old Pretoria Road. In 1936 there was a field of seven runners. This race was won by Fred Morrison. In 1937 the legendary Wally Hayward was the winner. The 10 kilometre race starts at 06h30 from the Centurion Rugby Club in West Avenue and has a 02:00 time limit. The addition of a race of shorter distance is growing in popularity. There is also a half marathon that starts at 06h30 from Centurion Rugby Club which has a 03:00 time limit. At the time of writing there was still some uncertainty about the direction of the race. This information was taken from the 2013 Guide confirm details with the organiser.
