Book review: (sort of) I like to read; only nonfiction. And Im currently reading two very interesting books. One is by Adam Feinstein, A History of Autism: Conversations with the Pioneers, and the other is the concise book by Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen, Autism and Asperger Syndrome (The facts). I recommend reading both books if you have time. Feinsteins book is rather fascinating if you truly want to learn about all of the bickering by experts over the years as to What is Autism? and how it has morphed into the latest term, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I just started reading Dr. Baron-Cohens book yesterday. Im planning on reading that one like most from the front to the back, no matter how long it takes. This book is short so Ill probably be finished with it in a week or two. Im only on chapter one reading about two case studies, Jamie who has Classic Autism and Andrew who has Aspergers Syndrome. I was in the middle of reading about Andrew and Ive already had an anxiety attack. The reason? (if youre interested), I can relate to both case studies with my own history. Im used to learning and understanding about gray areas of knowledge, but normally I prefer things to be black and white and extremely logical. What has continually perplexed me over the last two years since I began my quest for understanding my own situation, is that I havent yet read about anybody with a similar set of characteristics that I have. There has to be someone out there, dont you think? I know that Im a bit different but I doubt that Im completely unique. But who knows! (¡A quén sabe!) So exactly what label or ASD subset do we give somebody that displayed Classic Autism as a child, currently displays typical Aspergers Syndrome, has been diagnosed with probable Savant Syndrome, specifically Level One, Splinter Skills Savant, and also has a genius level I.Q.? I would really enjoy having an in-depth intellectual conversation with someone to explore this. Anyone out there thats interested, and qualified?
