August 1, 2014 POSITION: Tax Assessor SALARY RANGE: Grade 78 – Range $50,009 - $83,319 NUMBER OF VACANCIES: One DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS: Until Filled WORK DESCRIPTION: The tax assessor is appointed by the County Board of Commissioners to have general charge of the listing, appraisal, and assessment of all property in the County in accordance with the provisions of law. He shall perform the duties imposed upon him by law, and he shall have and exercise all powers reasonably necessary in the performance of his duties not inconsistent with the Constitution or the laws of this State. Work involves directing the County real estate/personal property appraisal and assessment and tax collections and listings; planning and directing the programs and services of the department such as establishing goals, objectives and priorities; planning and allocating departmental resources and manpower; developing departmental policies and procedures; developing departmental budgets and managing staff; preparing reports and making presentations to the governing board. This employee must exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment to ensure effectiveness of the tax program as well as exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the general public, property owners, co-workers and government officials. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, public administration, public policy, accounting or a related field preferred, and four years of experience in tax assessment, appraisal or collections, with one to two years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must be certified by the NC Department of Revenue within two years of appointment. .
