Boozhoo Everyone! My name is Kyle Mays and I am a doctoral - TopicsExpress

Boozhoo Everyone! My name is Kyle Mays and I am a doctoral candidate in the Department of History at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I am conducting research on the history of Native Americans in Detroit over the last 120 years, from the late-19th century until the late 20th century. I came to this research project because I was fascinated with the life of my great-grandmother, Esther Shawboose Mays (Saginaw Chippewa), who many of you may remember as an active member in Detroits various Native American organizations, including the North American Indian Association. Others may know my aunt Judy Mays, who was the founder and (founding) principal of Medicine Bear American Indian Academy. I want to tell their stories, as well as others, to scholars and community members, in order to better understand the history of Native Americans in postwar Detroit. I want to hear your stories. For part of the project, I want to hear the stories of Native Americans (women and men) who either lived in or currently live in Detroit and Wayne County during the postwar World War II period (1945-present). I am asking for participants who would not mind sharing their stories with me so that I may highlight and honor the activism of Detroits Native community, both historically and today. Through a casual conversation or through email/Facebook, I want to explore some broad themes about peoples lives in Detroit in general, as well as their involvement in Native American organizations in Detroit. Some sample questions might include: -Who was the first in your family to come to Detroit? -How was your experience living in Detroit as a Native American? -Did you participate in any Native American organizations? If so, in what capacity? Could you share your experience? If you did not participate, why not? -Did you participate in the Detroit Indian Educational and Cultural Center? What do you remember about that institution? -Did you attend Medicine Bear American Indian Academy? How was your experience? If you or if you know of a person who might want to share their story with me, feel free to contact me via email ([email protected]) or Facebook message, and we’ll arrange a time to talk. Peace, Kyle Mays
