Boy this seems to be my night for contrarian views and being the only one that remembers the constitution. Or is it my week? Or year? Frankly I am losing count at this point. Torture as a means of gathering intel is an iffy proposition at best. You are never sure if the info you are getting is truthful or not. Hell if you hook my scrotum up to a car battery I will tell you my own mother is Hitler before you get a chance to flip the switch. Even light torture methods are no guarantee you are getting the truth. We have prisons in America filled with people that confessed to CAPITOL CRIMES, yes I am talking prisoners that knew the confession would mean a death sentence and the torture involved was little more than extended interrogation without food or rest and turning up the heat in the room while lying to the suspect about evidence collected against him. We only find out years later thanks to DNA evidence that they are not guilty of the crime. So you want to advocate waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation techniques that put the person in question under fear of bodily harm or death and expect them to give you accurate intel? But they are barbarians that only respond to barbaric methods you say. Fine. If that is the case then wipe them out when you find them with extreme prejudice. That much at least is lawful on the battlefield in a declared war (oops forgot about that part didnt we) and exercise judicious force otherwise. But they are beheading our people and we have to stop it from happening again as well as the mass slaughter we see on a daily basis of (enter name of regional tribe here). So You are on a quest for vengeance then? That does not justify torture. Nowhere in the Geneva convention nor our constitution is torture allowed as a punishment. Even if you brought Stalin or Hitler or Mao themselves before a world court they MIGHT be executed but they would not be tortured. We have to do whatever it takes to protect American lives. Ah yes the old apple pie and homeland defense mantra. They are AMERICAN lives we are protecting. Lives that cherish the freedoms guaranteed by the constitution of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and all the blood that was spilled to secure to those very liberties. YOU want to trample all over them! I can hear you screaming at me about how THEY arent Americans and arent subject to our laws. In that you are right. However WE are and WE should hold ourselves to a higher standard considering WE consider ourselves to be the shining light of LIBERTY around the world! People risk their lives to make it to our shores for the one thing that these terrorists are trying to take away from us, our HUMANITY. The fact that above all else for all of our faults we strive to treat EVERYONE equally and fairly and with no threat of their FREEDOM being taken away.
