Brain Coffee 101 by Dr. Ricks: Too often we encourage our young men to be the quarterbacks in life, when in fact we neglect to train them to be the coaches. Yes, the Quarterback is the leader on the field, but the coach designs the playbook. Yes, the Quarterback is the one who gets the bulk of the credit and is immortalized in glory, but its the coach who has the power to fine him for being late to practice; bench him when he is not performing; and cut him for not living up the hype that was heaped upon him by fair weather fans. I never heard of great coaches suffering from broken legs, arms, or concussions years after they hung up their whistles. And great coaches win rings, make millions, and are inducted into Camdens Hall of Fame (football) and Naismith Hall of Fame (basketball) too. Just ask Bear Bryant; Chuck Nolan; Tony Dungy, Phil Jackson; Rick Saban, John Thompson, Coach Wooten, Lenny Wilkins, Red Arabuck; Bobby Bowden; Dean Smith; and on and on and on....Being a quarterback in life is a great thing, but being a coach of many great quarterbacks is priceless.
