Brain-paralyzed woman hailed as Chinas Emily Dickinson A Chinese woman, who suffers from brain paralysis, is being hailed as China’s Emily Dickinson, after one of her poems went viral on the Internet. Yu Xiuhua is an ordinary farmer from Hengdian, in Hubei Province. She began writing in 2009 purely as a hobby. But little did she know that one day she would become a rage across the nation. As soon as her latest poem, roughly translated as “Across Half China to Sleep with You”, was posted online, it became an instant hit. Such was the power of her words that popular feminist scholar Shen Rui hailed her as China’s Emily Dickinson. There are many who concur with Shen in celebrating Yu’s writings. “Even though she’s suffering from brain paralysis, it has not impaired her ability to think clearly,” wrote one commentator. But there are those who have been going through the words with a fine comb. They’ve criticized her literary skills and the rhymes. “There’s no qualified poet in China in these days…only cheaters, nuts and losers,” wrote Wu Fatian, a well-known lawyer. Here are a few lines from Yu’s poem. Do tell us which side of the argument you are on. “I braved rain of bullets to sleep with you, I pressed endless nights into a dawn to sleep with you, I am countless me running into one to sleep with you…”
