Breaking- in a vintage sewing machine. Were so fortunate to be able to purchase or hunt down a find our lovely vintage swing machines and put them to good use- just as they were intended. If youve purchased one from me or found one you love and want to use and have cleaned her, service her, ensured the electric is modern and safe, youre ready to go! Keep in mind, some of our machines have sat idle for a very, very long time. Its hard to tell just how long but its not uncommon to have a machine ready to go that has sat for 20 years or more! This is very typical with So many of them. You want to begin using them. Every day. Sew on them. And, after using your new to you beauty, give her a little drip of oil in all the oil spots and in the bobbin race. They need a period of time when you first begin using them to get looser Ive learned. Theres no replacement for this. They need to be ran! And then the one drop of oil in all the important spots daily for a month or two before they are sewing at peak performance. Ive found this especially with Featherweights to be true. They get looser, quieter and faster with this simple routine. If you dont have time to sew then remove the bobbin and just run her for a while full out. Followed by a drop of oil. Your machine will thank you by getting more slick and smooth each time. Even if the machine has been stephified (haha) and super clean, serviced and in tip top shape, this will make a world of difference! Ive seen Featherweights completely change performance during this period. Especially if they seem a little noisy for a usual quiet little singer 221! Follow this routine when you first get your new to you lovely and shell thank you with better performance with each use. Youll see! It really helps the first few months! After this period, then you dont have to be so conscientious about the oiling but remember, especially a singer 221, they do need to be oiled regularly! This is the biggest mistake you can make with a Featherweight- lack of proper oiling and lubricating. They are simple little treasures and very easy to maintain. It just takes a little adjustment in our routine. When we are used to sewing on a modern machine that we never oil, it can be an adjustment but once you get in the habit of dropping a little oil in after each use, youll be doing the very best thing for your vintage machine- any model! Give her this breaking-in period and youll have a even better working vintage machine!
