Breastfeeding Support Week Oct 1 - 7 in BC. It is just normal, make it so. What are you doing to support breast feeding moms and families? Do you or your staff implicitly encourage or discourage public breast feeding at your location? The Healthy Development and Womens Health Branch (HDWH) endorses the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation that breastfeeding be promoted and supported as the cultural norm for infant feeding Breastfeeding provides health benefits to both the baby and the mother. Breast milk provides infants with unique nutritional and health benefits, such as antibodies and reduced risk for developing asthma, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and becoming obese in later life. For the mother, breastfeeding helps the body recover from the stresses of pregnancy, labour and delivery. The risk of developing breast cancer is also reduced. Breastfeeding provides health benefits for mothers beyond emotional satisfaction. Mothers who breastfeed recover from childbirth more quickly and easily. The hormone oxytocin, released during breastfeeding, acts to return the uterus to its regular size more quickly and can reduce postpartum bleeding. Studies show that women who have breastfed experience reduced rates of breast and ovarian cancer later in life. Some studies have found that breastfeeding may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. llli.org/nb/nbjulaug01p124.html • mothers are supported to exclusively feed their infant(s) breast milk for the first six months; • at 6 months of age, breastfeeding should be complemented by the introduction of solid foods; • breastfeeding for two years and beyond is encouraged; and • breastfeeding is promoted as an important chronic disease prevention strategy.
