Breathtakingly Beautiful Badlands In pre-historic times, the area known as “the Badlands” was an inland sea. As the sea retreated, mammals moved in, so that today, it is one of the richest fossil beds in the world. Visitors regularly find fossils of sea and land animals as well as artifacts from the indigenous people of the area. The Native people named the region “the Badlands” because they were bad lands to travel across. Successive deposits of sediment and weather related erosion have created the breathtakingly beautiful buttes, spires and pinnacles that make the Badlands so stunning.
