Brian Schatz for US Senate Randall, This week we face a defining moment in the fight to combat climate change. On Tuesday, the Senate is scheduled to vote on legislation which would permit the development of the Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry Canadian tar sands—some of the dirtiest oil in the world—across the continental United States. This legislation would further big fossil fuel interests and encourage the continuing ravages of carbon pollution while creating few meaningful jobs in the United States. Since climate change is the challenge of our generation, we need to move forward with policies to support the development of clean energy instead of backwards by encouraging the use of fossil fuels which degrade our environment. The House of Representatives has already approved the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, despite the fact that it will unnecessarily encourage greenhouse gas emissions which threaten our planet. Scientists have also warned that the pipeline will hurt communities from North Dakota to Texas by disrupting plant, animal, and even human life. The Senate will consider this bill later this week, and we need to act fast if we want to stop it from passing Congress. This is just the latest assault against our environment. No matter the outcome, Senator Schatz will continue fighting for renewable energy, such as solar and wind, and decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels by championing legislation to curb carbon pollution.
