Bridging the Savannah… Work Resumes On US 378/State Route 43 Bridge Project In Lincoln County LINCOLNTON – Work will resume Monday on the construction of a new U.S. Highway 378/State Route 43 bridge across the Savannah River in Lincoln County, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. Short delays can be expected at this location as intermittent single lane closures will be used. Heavy equipment will be entering and exiting the roadway and motorist are asked to use caution, reduce their speed and be alert to changing traffic conditions. Work is being renewed on the project following a hiatus to determine the cause of anomalies that Georgia DOT detected in concrete bases of bridge support columns located in very deep water. That issue has been traced to Delayed Ettringite Formation (DEF), a chemical reaction that can occur when poured concrete overheats while curing. DEF is rare and there is no record of it ever having occurred on a bridge project in Georgia. DEF can, however, result in weakening and cracking of the concrete. Consequently, Georgia DOT decided six existing columns for the new bridge should be rebuilt using a new design that will be incorporated on the entire project.
