Brief history of Accounting and Finance department The Department of Accounting and Finance was established in 1962 in the name of “Department of Accounting”. Since its establishment, the Department has existed under different umbrellas. Originally it was under the College of Business, followed by the College of Social Sciences, then Faculty of Business & Economics, it was under the School of Business & Public Administration, and since April 2012 operates under the umbrella of the college of business and economics. The Department is presently one of the four departments within the college of business and economics. Currently, Dr. Tassew Woldehanna has been assigned as Dean of College of Business and Economics and Ato Sintayehu Demissie as Chairperson for the Department of Accounting and Finance. The department runs both graduate and undergraduate programs in Accounting and Finance. The undergraduate program is currently given both at regular and extension (evening program) division, while there are steps being taken to launch graduate program in the evening program currently the department only provides graduate program under the regular division. The department of accounting and finance strives to meet the University’s mission of instilling into present and future-leaders knowledge of current and future accounting, auditing and finance practices and relevant skills through student–centered high quality, viable programs which are fully recognized internationally and by both the private and public institutions in Ethiopia. The department of accounting and finance currently runs three programs: two graduates and one undergraduate level. The graduate programs both are given at the regular program and include MSc in Accounting and Finance and MBA in Finance (collaborated effort with the department of management). The undergraduate program (BA degree in Accounting and Finance) is being given both at the regular and evening program. In this regard the department of Accounting and Finance is also on the way to finalize a new graduate program MSc in Accounting and Auditing with a collaborative effort of the Federal Auditors General of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa city Administration and Oromiya State Auditors General Offices (expected to be opened in 2012/13 AY). In addition the department also has started some work to expand the existing graduate programs at the extension division since 2012/13 AY. To facilitate all of its programs the department has the required staff. The academic staff with their respective academic rank is listed below. Out of the total 31 academic staff 1 Professor of Emeritus, 5 have assumed Assistant Professorship, 25 are working as Lecturers and out of these as well almost half are pursuing PhD programs both locally and abroad .
