Briggs & Howell (Howell edition) gives Bad Words 3 out of 5 - TopicsExpress

Briggs & Howell (Howell edition) gives Bad Words 3 out of 5 skulls. A solid, if unspectacular film from first-time director and actor Jason Bateman. The premise is that 40 year old Bateman enters himself in the childrens spelling bee circuit, circumventing the rules and hoping to become champion. We dont understand his motive, but it unravels throughout the film. The comedy is similar to Bad Santa, in that Bateman is dry and sarcastic to everyone he comes in contact with, including the children. The comedy is R-rated and crass, so be forewarned. There are some solid laughs and one-liners, but for me they were few and far between. I left a tad underwhelmed, but still satisfied enough to give this one a rental recommendation. Batemans direction is sufficient, but is a work in progress as the story pace lags from time to time. Give this one a look if you are a big Bateman fan.
