Britain’s Most Admired Charity now in Portstewart Causeway Foodbank recently opened its second Satellite Distribution Centre in Portstewart, operating from Portstewart Baptist church on Tuesday mornings from 10am-11am. Causeway Foodbank is part of foodbank charity The Trussell Trust who were recently named ‘Britain’s Most Admired Charity’ at Third Sector’s 2013 charity award ceremony held at Google HQ in London. This prestigious award was based on the votes of CEO’s of UK charities and not-for-profit organisations who were asked to select a charity that had gained the admiration of others in the sector through its recent achievements. These could include achieving its objectives, providing outstanding service to beneficiaries or carving out a distinctive position and voice for itself. The Trussell Trust runs a 360 strong network of foodbanks across the UK which partner with local churches and communities to provide emergency food to people in crisis. The Causeway Foodbank has three available opening times in the Coleraine area, and is excited to now extend a fourth, much needed service into the Portstewart area. Recently families in crisis within Portstewart have walked into Coleraine and back again simply to collect an emergency food pack. Melanie Gibson, Causeway Foodbank Manager comments ‘We are so pleased to partner with Portstewart Baptist church who will provide this lifeline to families within their home community.’ New research out today shows that 1 in 5 UK parents are struggling to feed their children, and that the budgets of many families reliant on free school meals had been stretched to breaking point over the school holidays. As increasing numbers of UK families and individuals struggle to make ends meet, the award reflects the charity’s quick, community based response to a growing need. Trussell Trust foodbanks have helped record numbers of people in the last year, giving three days’ emergency food to 346,992 people during 2012/13 FY, an increase of 170 percent on the previous year. Three new foodbanks are currently opening every week to help meet demand.
