British TV Ad recreating the December 1914 Christmas Truce. Five months after World War I began, on the Western Front thousands of British and German officers and soldiers disobeyed orders and left their trenches to meet each other and exchange gifts, and even play Football. So many soldiers did this it was impossible to punish anybody and was extremely embarrassing to the bloodthirsty but cowardly British desk generals and their staffs--cavalry officers whose horses were frightened by loud noises and who were only used to fighting unarmed natives and unarmed civilians with cavalry-- who were afraid of going within 40 or 50 miles of a battlefield. (That was the range of the largest cannon.)
