Brooks Family Heritage Walk and Open House Offered October 12 The Brooks Estate is beautiful in the fall -- come enjoy it on October 12! (and check out the photos below. . .) A Guided walk. . . Doug Carr of the Medford- Brooks Estate Land Trust (M-BELT) will offer the Brooks Family Heritage Walk on Saturday, October 12, starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church at 160 High Street, Medford and ending at the Shepherd Brooks Manor at the Brooks Estate about 1:30 p.m. … and an Open House --- The event includes a Manor Open House from 2:00 to 4 p.m., for those who prefer to come directly to the Brooks Estate. Tours, refreshments and an update. . . Some background and some details -- The Brooks Family was one of the founding families of Medford and among its most prominent citizens through their 300-year presence in Medford over eight generations. This 2-hour tour will highlight the physical legacy and heritage of Brooks Family in Medford, including the Grace Episcopal Church , several Brooks houses, the Brooks School, the Slave Wall and other Brooks sites. Participants are welcome to walk the entire tour, or drive themselves to different locations and join in. Open House continues at the Manor from 2:00 p.m. until 4 p.m.! (you are welcome to just come to the Open House.) Refreshments will be served at the Manor. Find more about the Festival at medfordfestival.org Access and parking -- NOTE: If you come directly to the Brooks Estate for the Open House: It is best to walk up the access drive from the green gate at 275 Grove Street in Medford, just beyond the black gates of the Cemetery. If you drive, there are some parking spaces in the small lot across from the Boardwalk, along the access drive, and a few spaces up at the end of the access drive, near the Manor. Otherwise, do not park in the Brooks Estate, unless you need handicapped parking, which is reserved by signs at the Manor. Do not park in the Oak Grove Cemetery. The Medford-Brooks Estate Land Trust, Inc. (M-BELT) is the community nonprofit membership organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of this wonderful historic and open space asset. M-BELT has worked for over a decade on this large endeavor, contributing thousands of dollars and volunteer hours towards the protection and restoration of this wonderful community asset (owned by the City of Medford since 1942 and permanently protected in 1998.) In early 2012, M-BELT submitted the Brooks Estate Master Plan to the City of Medford and the Medford City Council. The Brooks Estate Master Plan is a comprehensive, professional, and feasible plan to ensure the sustainability of the Brooks Estate. The Plan may be viewed at brooksestate.org In March 2012, as part of the City’s overall capital bonding plan, the Mayor of Medford proposed bond funding for the Plan to the Medford City Council. The matter remains there. In the meantime, M-BELT continues to forge ahead with improvements to the property, including work funded by a grant from the Cummings Foundation in June, 2013.
