Broome SHS boasts one of the largest and most innovative computer networks north of Geraldton. As computers become more essential to so many aspects of our daily lives it is inevitable that they also play a major role in both the way that students learn and the way that schools are managed. With over 350 desktops, 180 notebooks, 35 printers, 30 wireless points, 9 servers and 50kms of cable, Broome SHS’s ‘Network’ is a large and complex operation. For us the challenge is twofold: 1. To ensure a high availability of service so that students and staff can rely on the technology as close to 100% of the time as possible and if it does break, to fix it fast. 2. Make the technology useful and work for us such that it improves teaching and learning. The value adding that Broome SHS brings to this technology is what sets us apart from most schools earning us numerous awards and accolades. Broome SHS offers the following innovations: • Multimedia Centres: Every classroom has a fixed large screen multimedia projector with speakers on a dedicated PC. Many classrooms have Interactive Whiteboards. • Computer Access: 12 Minilabs of PCs around the school along with 4 trolleys each with 28 notebooks as well as the Library with 24 PCs and 8 notebooks. • ClickView: a collection of over 1400 educational videos that can be viewed on any school device by every student on demand (soon accessible from home). • eTV: an in-house collection of over 2200 recorded educational TV shows that can be viewed on any school device and from home via our website. New TV shows are recorded and added weekly by staff via an electronic program guide on our website. • Online Learning System: a place for staff to create web based courses that allow everyone to access resources and content from any web browser, anywhere. There are currently over 40 online courses complementing the face to face class contact occurring at school. • Web Presence: A school website providing information for students and the community as well as sharing our successes and providing a login portal to access internal school content. • Our updated Facebook page also keeps you informed about what goes on at your school. • An automated newsletter email system that parents and community members can self-enrol in (or unenrol from) to receive school newsletters and other urgent school messages. • Message-U: an automated system that uses SMS to inform parents via their mobile phones of student absences from school or other urgent information. • 2 x Solar Arrays (1KW and 10KW) that add electricity back into the grid while recording our power usage and savings data that can be accessed by classes – Broome SHS also runs automated sitewide PC shutdowns each evening and on weekends saving approximately $35000 in power each year. • A Geo-Seismic earthquake sensor used by UWA but accessible by school staff for analysis of actual earthquakes in real-time or recordings. • In-house developed “Teacher Apps” for staff to perform many extra-curricular and mandated tasks with the minimum of effort. • Support for a huge range of subject specific software and hardware such as sensor probes in Science and Mathematics as well as the latest ‘industry standard’ Adobe Creative Suite used in all Information Technology and Media classes. We also support students who are engaged in DoE’s ‘Centra Online Learning’ or Distance Education over the Internet. • Support of a number of IPADS to enhance the Ed Support and Literacy programs. These and other innovative ICT resources engage and both enhance the learning of our students while improving the efficiency of our staff so they can devote more time and effort to teaching and ensuring that our students and your kids are “the best that they can be”. As we move into the future, Broome Senior High School begins trialling a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) model so that any user with any device can access learning at Broome SHS. Google “Broome SHS” and find out what we’re doing anytime. If you want to know more then ask us for a guest logon to access our online resources or get you kids to log you on with their own account.
