Bude CATS have sent us the below PRESS RELEASE following the success of their 10th Annual CATS Awards Evening on 01.05.14 YOUNG PEOPLE’S POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION CATS 10th ANNUAL AWARDS EVENING IN BUDE May 1st saw the 10th Annual Awards Evening of Community Action Through Sport (CATS) at the Parkhouse Centre, Bude. CATS, whose mission statement is to promote, recognise and reward young people for positive community action with sports and healthy living awards began in Bude 10 years ago and is now being rolled out across Devon and Cornwall and beyond thanks to the generosity of CATS Partners and sports providers of the area, without whom it would be hard to achieve the success of the programme. Thursday evening was a true testament to this, with over 128 young people being recognised and remarkably, between them, that accrued to an incredible 3,633 volunteer hours in a 12 month period. The awards this year were presented by Mrs Denise May MBE, co-founder of CATS and Mr Martin Reay, Budehaven Community School. It was fantastic to see the invited guests this year, who were ex-Budehaven students and ex-CATS committee members. Jonny Stephens, who is now in his 5th year at Southampton University, studying medicine and Lillie Latter, studying law, also at Southampton University. sCOOL CATS The evening was opened by the very talented Budettes from Bude Junior School and Jonny presented the first two categories, sCOOL CATS and fundraising. Youngsters were nominated for a wide range of volunteering activities and projects. these included Kelsey Wosnitzka as the first prime minister for the youth parliament; Charlotte Spooner and Katie Edgcumbe for mentoring younger students at the looking good feeling good project; Laurie and Liam, mentored by Matt Thewsey, assisted by Ben Roberts for their school and community IT support; the Haven Student Management Team Sam Marshall Evans, Jack Wallis, Bruno Carrico, Lucy Fanet, Tia Wharton, Sophie Heard, Charlotte White, Claudia Etherington, Ella Platt, Ellie Maynard, Zac Credington, Scott Edwards, Laura Westlake; Luke Mooney and Marie Johns. Eleanor Tootill was nominated for her support in the CRE8 art club. Coral and Charlotte Diffey for running the weekly year 7 dance club and Charlotte also was a lifeguard at Friday Night Splash and Rosie Greensmith supporting the year 11 students following the vocational route prepare resources for an Easter themed nursery party. Other youngsters were Ryan Hodge and Jamie Noon for supporting the Poppy Base; Bethany Hiatt as a road safety officer; Leam Powell for being caring and helpful to other children at school. FUNDRAISING The second category was for fundraising with Dan and Rohan Ellis who took part in the Bath family fun run, raising £250; Chelsea Wilcox for volunteering her time to support local Cats Protection fairs; Rosie Feehan for organising a sponsored silence for Green Peace; Xavier Booth for organising a school marathon; to Jaik Payne for acting as a waiter and organising other young helpers at local big breakfast fundraisers; Lucy Wells, Callum Woolley, Olivia Wilson and Toby Gifford for fundraising for Help the Heroes; Saffron Rendle, Jasmine Smith and Zoe Harrison for organising a cake sale and nail bar for Children in Need; Jodie Granger for raising funds for CATS; Jack Barrett, Morgane Dumas, Jamie Henry, Sikira Bevan and Jesse Nottle, the Bude Youth CATS committee. Outstanding recognition was given to Sam Fanson, who not only runs an after school squash club every week but also for his incredible fundraising efforts, running the London marathon in 3 hours 49 minutes and raising over £3,550.00 for the charity BLISS The next award was a poignant part of the evening when two young ladies Charlie and Laurie-Mai Butler, were recognised for fundraising for the Epilepsy Society, following the loss of their older sister Georgie, who sadly passed away shortly before her 21st birthday as a result of nocturnal epilepsy. The girls set about a huge fundraising effort, involving a myriad of activities, resulting in a total over six and a half thousand pounds to date. These first awards were then celebrated further by a spine tingling performance from Bude’s Got Talent winner, Zola. Jonny Stephens was thanked and then Lillie Latter was welcomed on stage to present the wider community and sports coaching awards. WIDER COMMUNITY These included 1st Bude Scouts Jasmine Smith, Michael Currie, Max Busby, Josh Steer, Sam O’Reilly, Ben Briggs and Theo Sampson for delivering the Xmas post which enabled many elderly residents to have a cheaper method of getting their post delivered; Victoria and Robert Clarke-Feltham, Charlotte Penny, Josh Hoather, Charlie Hawken and Rowan Webster from Eden Chapel for helping with church events, fundraising, building a skate board half pipe, as well as fundraising for the Cornwall Air Ambulance and Water Aid. Bude Army Cadets Lucas Whatley, Owen Hanley, Sam Tasker, Maria Hopgood, Ella Cook, Chloe Prewitt, support leaders Pirran and Ellen Jordan, Reece Osborne, Katy Connor for their commitment to Bude Army Cadets, improving a community garden, and raising £3,000 for the poppy remembrance, ably led by dedicated Sargent Matt Cowling. Caz Dyer and Natasha Verde-Salinas as youth ambassadors for Bude Carnival and Emma Jones for assisting with 1st Bude Scouts and using her great leadership skills and scouting experience to help younger scouts. As well as Ruth and James Hardy, James Hambly and James Pollard for their outstanding work at 1st Bude Scouts. Sophie McConnell was also nominated for her work in Bude Youth Theatre. BUDE CATS YOUTH HUB Bude Cats Youth Hub has been established as an extension to Friday Night Splash, managed by Annie Winsland and funded by Bude CATS and the People’s Health Trust. The hub organises a range of weekly activities in the evenings and promotes projects run by young people for young people, involving young people running the projects. Some of these activities include the CRE8 art group; an IT and media club; writing funding bids and managing Friday Night Splash. The young people have taken on various roles which include organising equipment; mentoring younger members; volunteering as peer mentors at inner city surf reward weekends; publicity; fundraising; upgrading and designing a skate park as well as moving Friday Night Splash to the sea pool for the summer. To their credit, they have also gained additional personal qualifications. These young people include James Betts, the chairman of the Youth Hub; Summer Thomas; Ellie Cartwright; Theo White; Sophie Streeter; Adam Giddings; Kieran Chapman; Tom Hingley; Sophie Henry; Amelia Jessop; Sarah Sutcliffe and Brandon Lipscombe. The level 4 award winners who went above and beyond any expectations, were Ben Clarke, as the PR member of the Youth Hub exec; Dan Smith for developing the media IT club; Ryan Kellet for inspiring others to join; Jack Busby as treasurer and manager for the Friday night sessions at the sea pool and George Martin and Leila Selly who are both constant and essential members of the youth hub committee. SPORTS COACHING Young people nominated in this category included Lucy Kenny, Tammy Brown, Jess Brooks and Victoria Lowe who acted as mentors at the surf reward weekends. Jo and Sian Spooner for their coaching support at the North Cornwall hockey development centre; Kaya Spate for her commitment over two years for supporting the lunchtime rowing club; Oli Barkwill, Miriam Westaway and Imogen Ravenscroft for their weekly support and commitment to the students with disabilities in the arbour. Chloe McGrath for being a reliable and professional hockey umpire at inter-school matches; Sophie Wilson and Helen Rosser who set up a new after school club for children at Bude Infant School. Nye Kemball Dorey and Stephen Hayden for supervising the fitness suite at school. Level 4 & 5 winners were Shannon & Katrina Bluett who have been committed to assisting in coaching the year 7 & 8 netball teams and coaching the weekly community gymnastics club for 5 year olds. Georgia Higham for her commitment to helping the Year 7 & 8 teams train at their weekly hockey practice and Cassie Walker who has been volunteering and attending training weekends with the Ten Tors Budehaven team. Conor Joslyn for coaching the school basketball club every week. Chris Cottle & Lewis Wolfenden-Brown for supporting the Bude CATS Urban Climber project and Lewis, Ella Henwood and Gemma Penrose for being outstanding role models at Bude Surf Lifesaving Club, carrying out 40 to 50 hours volunteering each. Before the last award was presented, the audience were once again treated to an immaculate and moving solo performance by Zola. All sponsors were thanked for their support; the Bude Scouts who served the refreshments; Mark Tootill and his team for the IT support; the Street Pastors for their support at Friday Night Splash; Jackie Walter, the Bude CATS committee, Bob Willingham, South West Studios, the photographer and last but not least, to the guests and parents who attended the evening. Just over £100 was raised from the raffle, which was donated to Charlie and Laurie-Mai Butler for the Epilepsy Society. OUTSTANDING YOUNG PERSON OF THE YEAR The last award of the evening was for the Outstanding Young Person of the year, presented by both Jonny and Lillie. This young lady was nominated by 4 different groups for her volunteering, incredibly she had volunteered over 150 hours during the last 12 months. Congratulations went to the well-deserved level 5 winner Paige Cornish and in recognition of this, she was presented with an engraved shield.
