Bugun Asure Gunu! Today is Noahs Pudding Day! Ashure (in Turkish: Aşure) or Noahs Pudding is a Turkish dessert dish that is made of a mixture consisting of grains, fruits and nuts. This pudding traditionally contains apricots, raisins, currants, figs, pine nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, chick peas and navy beans to name just a few ingredients. It is completely vegan. This is one of the oldest desserts in the world. In Turkey it is served during the first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram, on the Tenth of Muharrem, or the Day of Ashure. Ashura means tenth in Arabic. Ashure is part of the culinary tradition of Turkey as well as many of the surrounding countries, and Christian and Jewish cultures as well as Muslim share similar versions under a variety of names. Ashure signifies the day Noah’s Ark set on dry land, when the Flood finally subsided and the Noah’s Ark settled on Mount Ararat in Agri, those on the vessel wanted to hold a celebration as an expression of the gratitude they felt towards the God. But alas, the food storage’s of the ship were practically empty and so they made a soup with all the remaining ingredients they could find and thus ended up with the ashure. In anecdotal history, it is claimed that when Noahs Ark came to rest on Mount Ararat in northeastern modern-day Turkey, and Historic Armenia. Noahs family celebrated with a special dish. Since their supplies were nearly exhausted, what was left (primarily grains, dried fruits and the like) was cooked together to form a pudding, what is now call Ashure. The Day of Ashure is an important day in the Muslim year, corresponding to the Mosaic Yom Kippur observed by Jews, and is observed by Muslims world over in honor of the prophet Moses. Today, Ashure is made in large quantities to commemorate the arks landing and is distributed to friends, relatives, neighbors, colleagues, classmates, among others, without regard to the recipients religion or belief system as an offering of peace and love. It is very good for the cold winter days!! Enjoy!!!
