Bulletin No. 3-- September 2013 Sugar Bowl “Blessing of the Drums” to Initiate Peace Drums Project The historic Sugar Bowl in Brandywine Park will be the site of a “blessing” of a set of steel drums prior to their shipment to Israel for the start of the innovative Peace Drums project. Project leaders and supporters, local officials and the general public are invited to gather at the beautifully restored 111 year-old bandstand at the north end of the Washington Street Bridge at 12:30 on Sunday, October 6 for a brief send- off celebration for percussionist Harvey Price who will be taking the first of two sets of steel drums to Israel. Working with ten Arab and Jewish youth , he will form the nucleus of an interfaith Galilean Steel Band. As additional funds are raised a second set of drums will be sent and the band expanded to twenty players. Their two local teachers will then be brought to the University of Delaware for a month for further instruction with Price. The 45 minute event will include a project update, Hebrew, Christian and Moslem scripture readings, peace songs and prayers and the blessing ceremony followed by rousing steel drum music by the University’s Delaware Steel band. (In case of rain the event will be held in the Congregation Beth Shalom Atrium, 1801 Baynard Blvd, just across from Brandywine Park. ) For a preview of the music see the video at peacedrumsproject.org of the May 5 project launch. So please plan now to join your Jewish, Christian and Moslem friends and neighbors to mark the first program at the Sugar Bowl and support this promising interfaith peacemaking project. By the way, thanks to a recent $2,000 gift from the Westminster Presbyterian Peacemakers, we have now raised $41,000 or 43% of our overall $95,000 goal. As always additional gifts made payable to “Delaware Community Foundation” and earmarked “Peace Drums Project” are much appreciated. They can be mailed to the DCF, Community Service Building, 100 W. 10th Street, Suite 115, Wilmington, DE 19801. For credit card gifts visit delcf.org/make_donation.php, select “Peace Drums Project Fund,” fill in the form and click “submit.” Your gift will go directly into our account and the Foundation will send a thank you/receipt letter for tax purposes. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Sugar Bowl on Sunday, October 6! Shalom/Salaam, Rev. Robert D. (Bob) Stoddard, Jr., Project Coordinator
