(But) she is a girl But she is a girl the boys affirm just in case I am all confused and un-African too (and an easy target for persecution of the homophobic type as on our doorstep and further up your street) But she is a girl they laugh and say that’s why she hits just like a girl (she flailing at a boy) (stereotypes abound in the young of mind drawing on the virtues set in their learning pathway) (boys in blue beat better than girls in pink that’s the naked truth) But she is a girl and she’ll grow up into a woman And then scream just like a woman Bob Dylan’s “Just like a woman” comes to mind, as I amuse myself at the expense of some school youngsters just up my street; whilst elsewhere the beloved rainbow country’s diplomatic tap-dance around anti-gay legislation and actions on our continent raises very little comment or protest. And this in our hawking season, when politicians are all up poles. See “Ugandan gays and lesbians live in fear after law signed”, Cape Times March 11 2014; “Four men whipped in public for being gay”, CT March 7 2014; “A woman’s screams often fall on deaf ears” – My View, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, Weekend Argus 9 March 2014; and the Cape Times’ Opinion pieces “Gay law pernicious” (March 11 2014) and “Police Brutality”, (March 10 2014).
