By ISN EDITOR Published: 06 March 2014, 1:12 PM Warri as it is called here in Antigua and Barbuda is a board game which is said to be over 2000 years old. Its origin is said to be of an African heritage and is one form of the original game called Mancala. Warri is played in many forms and is enjoyed by many in countries/islands across the globe. Here in Antigua and Barbuda Warri is considered as part of our (sporting) Culture and is played on the street corners, in homes, clubs and taverns (pubs). It is a relaxing sport/game enjoyed by both men and women. It is of great importance to note that many women play a great part in the development of many of our champion Warri players in Antigua and Barbuda. Before the Organization, local players engaged in many tournaments at National levels in and across the island. These tournaments, paved the way for the Formation of what is now the Antigua and Barbuda Warri Association (ABWA). In 1997, Antigua entered in the World Warri Festival which was held in Europe and was the top prized winners. Since that time Antigua and Barbuda has won championship in every international festival and or tournament. In February, 2011, the Antigua and Barbuda Warri Association was formed and registered within the Ministry of Sports with its first Presidents as Mr. Steve (Shoul) Messiah. The Antigua and Barbuda Warri Association presently has a membership of Sixty Four (64) registered players. Registration/Membership fee is twenty-five (EC$25.00) dollars per person yearly and can be done with any Executive Member of the Association. Tags:
