By now the popular myth that Columbus discovered America has long been overturned, yet we have been celebrating Columbus Day for nearly a century. I hope that if you didn’t know the horror behind Columbus day, that you will know 25% of the truth by the end of this video and you will research it in your free time. Not only did Columbus not discover America, but he wasn’t even the first to cross the Atlantic. In fact, Loewen reports two Natives crossed the Atlantic over 1000 years prior. Columbus saw the Natives as potential slaves and he did exploit them. Columbus brought with him European diseases like the flu, measles and smallpox, killing over 90 percent of the Native American population. Finally, let’s take a look at the journal of one of Columbus’ men. “While I was in the boat I captured a very beautiful Carib woman the Lord Admiral gave to me, and with whom, having taken her into my cabin, she being naked according to their custom, I conceived desire to take pleasure. I wanted to put my desire into execution but she did not want it and treated me with her fingernails in such a manner that I wished I had never begun. But seeing that (to tell you the end of it all), I took a rope and thrashed her well, for which she raised such unheard of screams that you would not have believed your ears. Finally we came to an agreement in such manner that I can tell you that she seemed to have been brought up in a school of harlots.” Many states have abandoned the practice of celebrating Columbus Day and many advances continue to made in the Native American culture, such as the trademark for the Washington Redskins being struck down as many become aware of the derogatory nature of the term.
