Byron Bay includes the most easterly point on the continent of Australia catching the country’s first light of day and boasting an orientation to Greenwich meantime that grants it the status of the first civilized place to start the new year, a good 15 hours before the ball drops in New York. The quaint and functional lighthouse at Byron Bay has been operational since 1901 and still serves to warn sailing ships of rocky shores. The free tour of the lighthouse was fun and informative. The gusty winds at Byron Bay were so strong that it literally took two people to open and close the tower door, which granted access to stroll the upper balcony. I had to brace myself to stay steady and hold onto my hat until I made it around to the opposite side of the wind. But the views were glorious, amazing clouds against deep blue sky and the sea glimmering blue-green in the sun.
