#CAIR-New Jersey Banquet a Success (SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ 4/8/14) – Some 400 New Jersey residents turned out on Saturday for the 10th Annual Awards Banquet of that states chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ). During the sold-out banquet, CAIR-NJ awarded distinguished contributors of the Muslim community including NY Jets player Muhammad Wilkerson, Huma Hassan of Wafa House, a nonprofit organization devoted to support victims of domestic violence, local Muslim scholar Ahmed Burhani, and attorney activist Atiya Aftab. Rep. Rush Holt of New Jerseys 12 Congressional District made a surprise appearance for the audience as a special guest speaker. He vocalized his support for the Muslim community and the great efforts CAIR has made in building partnerships with elected officials and combating Islamophobia. CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad reminded the audience of community involvement and that CAIR is only as strong as they are. Muslim scholar and activist Imam Johari Abdul Malik delivered the keynote address about the importance of staying vigilant in the fight for Muslim civil rights and to not let complacency hinder the communitys resolve. CAIR-NJ is a chapter of Americas largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
