#CAIR-San Diego Good News Alert: High School Drops, Then Includes ‘Islamic Chant’ in Concert (SAN DIEGO, CA, 11/7/2014) - Last night, a representative from the San Diego chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-San Diego) attended a high school choir concert to see if a so-called “Islamic chant” would be included or excluded. After receiving a complaint, Mt. Carmel High School at first dropped “Zikr” as part of the concert, despite having been included in the program along with many other religious and spiritual chants from various different traditions. CAIR-San Diego Executive Director Hanif Mohebi immediately made it clear that “if one religious song is going to be included than all should be included, and if one is being excluded than all should be excluded.” Video: CAIR-San Diego Rep Welcomes Inclusion of ‘Islamic Chant’ in School Concert youtu.be/CB7h5E7Ciqg Through the efforts of the students, parents, teachers, the school administration decided to allow the students to include all the chants. “The move to include the Islamic Chant is welcomed,” said the Mohebi “It is concerning though that the Islamic and Korean chants were initially removed so quickly, while the majority of the concert had other religious songs.” CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization.
