CALL FOR PAPERS HORNBILL LITERATURE FESTIVAL 2014, 3-4, December Theme: FROM ORALITY TO WRITING: A HISTORICAL AND THEMATIC STUDY OF LITERATURE IN NAGALAND.” The main thrust of Hornbill Literature Festival will be a Two day Seminar and a series of events with the objective to assess the status and function of literature in Nagaland. EXISTING SCENARIO AND REALITIES Literature in Nagaland is at a crucial juncture. For generations our literature - culture, history and narratives etc has been handed down through an oral tradition giving a definite shape to our identity. Today, orality is fast disappearing which is further compounded by the fast dying out of the raconteurs. As such there is an urgent need to reproduce our literature in writing within the challenge of contesting versions which makes writing all the more challenging. Within such strain, the urgency is felt especially in the world of academia where written literatures appear in the main text, oral sources today, do not appear even as footnotes. Thus, Literature in Nagaland seems to be caught up at a crucial juncture traversing a rough transition from orality to the written. Further, the problem is compounded by the lack of detailed studies from below, from an insider’s perspective within the larger discourse of Naga Epistemology. SEMINAR The objective of the seminar is to see how orality has come to shape our literature and also study its transition to a written culture. A detailed study is necessary to examine the transition and see whether it is just a mere shift from oral to the written or there is rupture from the oral. Is there a coherence or parallelism? These are certain pointers through which the status of literature in Nagaland can be assessed as well as the emerging literatures of Naga writing in English. The theme of the Two Day seminar will be on “FROM ORALITY TO WRITING: A HISTORICAL AND THEMATIC STUDY OF LITERATURE IN NAGALAND.” The seminar will be divided into different sessions to cover the integral fields of literature. Experts will be asked to present their papers which will be followed by discussions. The final session will be a panel discussion. The various papers and summary findings will be edited and published in book from. A Brief Exposition of the Theme “FROM ORALITY TO WRITING: A HISTORICAL AND THEMATIC STUDY OF LITERATURE IN NAGALAND.” One needs to firstly understand the meaning of orality and oral literatures and how it has come to shape our history and today there is an urgent resurgence towards written culture. As such it is pertinent to study the shift. This shift can only be studied through a historical genealogy by giving a thematic exposition of the various discourses on literature. Another important aspect is to see the emergence of new vistas of writing within the shift from oral to writing which in a way has been shaped by colonial writings. Thrust Areas 1.
