CAN WE HAVE AN AMEN? This afternoon a bad man received a due sentence, and an innocent dog received due justice! Robert Lee Brian, whom horribly abused and tortured pit bull “Dude” (aka Bubba), and at least three other dogs who were killed, was handed a sentence of 15.5 years in prison thanks to the excellent work of prosecutor Hilary Bagley-Franzoia, Animal Control Officer, Jessica Vigel, and Judge Steve White who was very sympathetic to the vicious crimes, but very unsympathetic to any reasoning for why they occurred. The sentence included punishment for other convictions related to physical violence and threats made to a roommate, in addition to extra time for a previous strike. Judge White took several minutes to carefully explain that in all his years of presiding over serious crime trials, from situational incidents such as shootings, to pre-mediated, torturous murders, he’s always managed to see some bit of good in the defendants, but this one left him with no mercy for Brian and his crimes against his dogs due to the shear brutality. He hoped that Brian would take advantage of any and all resources for rehabilitation while incarcerated, but was concerned about whether he’d remain a threat after time served because of his severely violent nature. Judge White was regretful he couldn’t have given Brian more time behind bars, but gave him the maximum the law would allow. This conviction now gives Brian his second strike. We are so proud of Officer Vigel’s commitment to this case, and so thankful for the work of prosecutor Hilary Bagley-Franzoia! Today’s sentence is sure to be another building block toward increasing prosecutions and serious punishment for crimes against animals. Thank you to our volunteers and other animal lovers who joined us to show support and appreciation for justice!
