CAN YOU AFFORD TO EAT HEALTHY? . . . A report to be presented to city council Tuesday suggests some area families cannot afford to eat healthy. Two Elgin St. Thomas Public Health staffers will appear as a deputation to council to present the 2013 Nutritious Food Basket (NFB) report which monitors the costs associated with healthy eating. The survey — undertaken annually since 1999 — monitors the affordability and accessibility of food by relating the cost of healthy eating to individual and family incomes. The 2013 NFB report indicates the cost to feed a family of four in St. Thomas/Elgin is $739.80 per month, which the health unit notes may leave some individuals and families without adequate funds to eat healthy after paying other basic living expenses.
