CANADA GOVT OFFICE BUILDING FLOODED WITH WATER CAUSED BY LEAKING WATER WHERE IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT IS ALSO LOCATED WITH PEOPLE APPLYING PASSPORTS FOUND THE DOORS LOCKED AS PASSPORT OFFICE WAS ALSO AFFECTED RESULTING IN DELAY EDMONTON - About 3,000 federal employees got an unexpected day off work Wednesday after a pipe burst at Canada Place. The downtown office building was closed all day due to health and safety concerns caused by leaking water. Shannon McCourt, with Public Works and Government Services Canada, said the pipe burst somewhere inside the building Tuesday night, causing water damage that impacted some of the buildings systems. Maple Leaf Property Management made the decision to close the building, and worked with government services to assess and repair the damage and reopen as soon as possible. People hoping to get new passports from the Canada Place passport office Wednesday were met by locked doors. Some went to the Shaw Conference Centre across the street, saying they were told the centre had set up a temporary passport office, though that was not the case. To clear up the confusion, the centre posted a sign stating the office had not been moved and directed people to passport offices in Millbourne Market Mall, Hermitage Square, and Meadowlark Shopping Centre. Speaking Wednesday afternoon, McCourt was uncertain whether Canada Place would open Thursday morning. Edmontons fire department confirmed it received a call from Canada Place at 5:17 p.m. Tuesday, where water was leaking on the fourth and fifth floors. Four units were dispatched and crews were on scene until 6:49 p.m., when Maple Leaf took over. Canada Place houses numerous federal government offices including Canada Revenue Agency, Industry Canada, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
