CARNIVOROUS PLANT in ALASKA! From Allen Marquette...image taken on a hike in Cordova. "It is a macro or close up image of a carnivorous plant called a sundew. Sundews and all carnivorous plants live in nutrient poor soils so they have to supplement their nutrient needs by catching insects which are high in both nitrogen and other nutrients. The cilia or hairs on the ends of the leaf exude a sweet smelling and sticky sap that draws insects. Once the insects touch the sap, they become stuck and the sticky sap with its digestive properties slowly digests their bodies for nitrogen and other nutrients. This image has a gnat sized insect mired in the sap. The entire leaf is just under one inch in length!"
