CATHERINE TATE: LAUGHING AT THE NOUGHTIES Id seen a bit of Catherine Tate on Big Train recently and Sean Lock nominated her in his favorite actor section of his appearance on Bill Baileys Comics Choice series. She started as an actor since the mid-90s and shes appeared on a lot of TV shows. She was a companion to David Tennants Doctor. Here shes the host of this documentary that takes a gander at the change in British TV comedy shows in the new century. She interviews some of the people that made those shows and the guest list is pretty impressive. Chris Addison, Ash Atalla, Rob Brydon, Alan Carr, Jarred Christmas, Noel Fielding, Leigh Francis, Dawn French, Miranda Hart, Mathew Horne, Dom Joly, Lee Mack, Al Murray, Graham Norton, David Schneider, David Tennant and David Walliams. If youre an American you probably havent heard of most of them, or their shows. The documentary shows a lot of clips from the shows discussed. You can see a lot of those programs on YouTube. Take a look sometime, I know I did, and I got a lot of laughs. The one thing I did like was the people talking about the uncomfortable comedies of the period. Its sometimes called cringe TV and shows like Ali G, The Office and Borat are some of more well know programs of that type here in the US. I have to admit I dont care for that sort of comedy. I dont mind a bit of it in shows like Little Britain but I dont need to see a big stream of it. Catherine tries to put the change in comedy and the barriers pushed at, broken through, and pissed on, in prospective. The noughties were a pretty tough time in Britain and people were angry. Comedy became angry too. Theres more swearing, some of it was brilliant, and cringe worthy. The new Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi, plays a political spin doctor in The Thick Of It. He has great anger and a vicious tongue. It looks pretty uncomfortable, might not watch that one. Generally Laughing at the Noughties is a good intro to some of the interesting comedy that sprang up in that period. I got a lot of laughs out of it and there were some nice interviews. I like programs like this, gives me an idea what I might like to look at and what I might like to avoid. youtube/watch?v=AqqCjuV9mSs
