CATTLE PRICES rise as heavy stock leave for Indonesia #banliveexport Thousands of heavy cattle from northern Australia will be exported to Indonesia this week, as Australia begins to fill an order for 75,000 ready-to-slaughter cattle by the end of the year. The extra demand from Indonesia and short supply of heavy cattle in the north have pushed the price to $1.80 a kilogram. Chair of the NT Livestock Exporters Association, Kevin Mulvahil, says itll be a busy fourth quarter for the live export industry. This fourth quarter is looking extremely busy, especially in the next week where well see a significant number of cattle leaving the port of Darwin. Mr Mulvahil says sourcing heavy cattle is proving a challenge, and stations from across the north are helping to fill shipments. The dry conditions in the Territory have made it very difficult to source ready-for-slaughter cattle, so theyre coming from deep within Queensland, the Kimberley (WA) and the Northern Territory, so theyre coming from a fairly wide range of producers.
