CCSO: Johns Island woman cited after horses found in poor condition Jan 23, 2015 02:23 PM JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Charleston County Sheriffs Office say three horses were seized from a Johns Island property after the animals were found in poor condition. On Thursday, a deputy responded to an address on Plowground Road after receiving a report of horses being neglected. The deputy reported locating three horses that were in poor condition, along with a foal near the back of the property. Susan Housley, the owner of the horses, told the deputy that she fed her horses twice a day and was not sure why they were not gaining weight. Housley said she had owned the Irish Sport Horse Stallion since he was a baby, had the two Thoroughbreds for about a year, and the foal was a month old. According to Housley, she fed the horses a full square bale of hay twice a day, but said they were having problems with impaction colic, so she began giving them square bales. The deputy told Housley to have a dentist to see the horses, change the horses feed and add oil to it, and to try feeding the horses hay three times a day. Housley was issued two citations for ill treatment of an animal.
