CF: I have a couple of books with the word “Heart” in the title. This book doesn’t have heart there, but the main character’s name is an anagram for “heart.” She has a great heart but she’s damaged, she struggles to connect with other people—but her gift is the ability to reach inside older people who are suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s and pull them back. I told a friend about that and her eyes misted and she said, “I know who I’d want her to meet.” Treha is that kind of engaging character. NC: Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe she’s based on some of what you observed in your own children while they struggled with the toxic mold exposure your family deal with? CF: True. In 2008 we were unknowingly exposed to mold that was hidden in our house for years. That exposure led to devastating physical problems that still continue today. We’re better, we’re moving forward, but one question that keeps coming up is, “If this is as good as we get, are we okay with that?” That’s been a great question to help us focus not on how sick we are or how much we’ve progressed, but what we CAN do right now.
