CHATHAM ARTILLERY PUNCH...A SHORT STORY A friend of mine the other day, asked me if I knew anything about Chatham Artillery Punch...It is understandable that she did not know how it is made or how it was started, as she is from New York....but has a fine Tea Business for years in Brunswick and now has moved her shop to Savannah.....So I sent her this bit of background on the punch yesterday.....I know many that follow this page also may not be familiar with the story either, so I am posting the story here for everyone to read. The Chatham Artillery, a local militia, had its beginnings in 1751 when The 118th Field Artillery which was organized on 18 April 1751 in the Georgia Militia in the District of Savannah as four independent volunteer companies, 3 of foot and one of horse. It was mustered into service of the colony 11 June 1751 at Savannah under the command of Captain Noble Jones....Later in 1786 was the unit was reorgainzed to form The Chatham Artillery. The Militia members participated in the Oconee Wars between 1789 and 1793. George Washington visit to Savannah in 1791 was in part to thank The Unit for that service. During his visit,President Washington presented the Chatham Artillery with 2 cannon, one that was captured at Yorktown during the Revolutionary War, and one that was presented as a gift to the young country by France....To honor Washington The Chatham Artillery held a ball; and what’s a ball without punch? So they served a special punch the Unit had created to celebrate George’s visit. It is said that the punch they served was stronger than the gunfire from the two brass cannons Washington presented during his Visit......Later when President James Monroe visited Savannah in 1819, he partook of the Special Punch declaring it, suave and deceitful. Many say the punch originated when soldiers of the Chatham Artillery threw together the booze they they could find. Liking what they created, the drink evolved into a recipe they would serve to visiting dignitaries; gaining the name it has today....The reciepe is as follows: Chatham Artillery Punch – For 100 People (Or Ten Admirals) 1 ½ gal. Catawba Wine ½ gal. Rum (probably Jamaican) 1 qt. Gin 1 qt. Brandy ½ pt. Benedictine 2 qt. Maraschino Cherries 1 ½ qt. Rye Whiskey 1 ½ gal. Strong Tea (probably black) 2 ½ lbs. brown sugar 1 ½ qts. Orange juice 1 ½ qts. Lemon Juice
