CHELSEA ARE BETTER OFF WITHOUT DAVID LUIZ Jose Mourinho has revealed the reasons behind David Luiz’s £50M sale to PSG&insisted the Brazilian intnl will not be missed this season. Mourinho is convinced that his revamped Chelsea squad is far stronger without the defender, who joined the French champions in 1 of the most remarkable deals of the summer. Luiz helped Chelsea win the Champions League in 2012 but became a peripheral figure when Mourinho returned, losing his place in the heart of the defence to veteran John Terry&the England intnl Gary Cahill. PSG’s mammoth outlay was a world record for a defender&they moved swiftly in June to head off potential interest from Barcelona – who failed to sign him last year – &Bayern Munich. The deal appeared smart business from Chelsea’s point of view after Luiz was roundly criticised for his performance in Brazil’s 7-1 defeat to Germany in the World Cup semi-finals. Now Mourinho has opened up on the 27yrs-old’s sale for the 1st time, revealing he was no longer needed. “Last season he was not regular 1st-choice for us,” he said. “David did important things here, was always a good professional&we will miss him as a good guy when he was with us. But from a football point of view we believe our squad is stronger this season than it was. “As a CB he was not at all [1st-choice],it was John&Cahill during the whole season. In midfield he was a physical guy&gave us some important things, especially when we played in the Champions League when Nemanja Matic couldn’t play. “But this season Matic can play in the Champions League so we don’t lose that physicality. The fact we also have Cesc Fabregas moves us in a different direction&we want to move in a different direction. It’s something that our football needs&we want to go in that direction.”
