CHIEF MUNYUMBWE EXPELS SUSPECTED WITCH FROM HIS CHIEFDOM Chief Munyumbwe of the Tonga people in Gwembe District has given a suspected witch a two-week ultimatum in which to leave his chiefdom. Chief Munyumbwe said this in Jongola after the Jongola community complained about Patrick Bbundenga who they have suspected of practicing witchcraft. Bbundenga is alleged to have bewitched a named Grade Eight pupil at Jongola Primary School. The self-confessed alleged witch has also named several community members, among them a teacher at the named school to be his accomplice. The named teacher who recently bought a canter and a car at the same time has continued to receive threats from the community. Meanwhile, Chief Munyumbwe has ordered Bbundenga to collect a letter that he can present to other chiefdoms to permit him to stay there. And when reminded of Bbundenga’s rights to belong to a chiefdom of his choice, the chief responded that it was for his safety that the chief is sending him out of his chiefdom. The chief further explained that if the suspected witch remained in the community where he is not wanted, his safety cannot be guaranteed. The office of the District Education Board Secretary that also rushed to the area last week are also contemplating transferring the named teacher to another school in order to secure his life and reputation. Last week, the chief, security wings and the education authorities rushed to Jongola to contain the situation after the irate community threatened to ‘deal’ with the suspected witches.
