CHSPE update: Cameron took the CHSPE on Saturday. Heres how it - TopicsExpress

CHSPE update: Cameron took the CHSPE on Saturday. Heres how it went. He didnt have an ID, so we went and got a passport picture done of him, and filled out the form they provided, and printed it on our school letterhead that we designed on Friday morning. The form required that we put his picture on it, and have the administrator of the school sign it twice, once on top of the picture. He also had to sign it at school, then in front of the registration desk person. It said that I had to bring my PSA, so I did. But they didnt look at it. It was very easy, they didnt question anything, and he got into the test without a problem. The test itself was easier than the SAT. Cameron had mostly been practicing with SAT materials because they are easier to get for free online than the CHSPE study materials. He said the CHSPE was much easier than what he practiced. Also, unlike the SAT where the students are given each section of the test separately, and they have a certain amount of time for each section, the entire CHSPE test is handed to the kids at the beginning and they have 3 hours to complete the whole thing - in any order. Cameron decided to do the essay first because it was the hardest part of the test for him, mostly because his hand gets tired. So he wrote it when he was fresh, and before he got tired from the rest of the exam. Then, after doing the exam, he went back and re-read his essay, ultimately changing the conclusion because he realized it was repetitive. It was freezing in the classroom, and even Cam wished he had brought a long sleeve shirt. There were probably 200 kids there taking the CHSPE, and about 500 kids taking the PSAT. So the line was long, and it took them over an hour to process everyone. They didnt start processing until 8. Even though the instructions said that you had to be there at 8, kids were arriving after 8 and were let in because they got started so late. All in all, it was a good first testing experience for Cam. He had never taken a formal test before. He was a little nervous, but overall, it wasnt too bad, and he feels he did fairly well. As a frame of reference - Cameron, for the most part, has designed his own curriculum from since he little, with reminders and suggestions from mom and dad about how to go about it. The only requirement we have of the kids is that they do some kind of learning activity every day that challenges them in some way - they usually choose workbooks, but sometimes online learning like khan academy or duo lingo, watching a coursera course, or doing a building or designing project. They have never been tested, graded, or assessed. I have to admit I was a little nervous with Cam taking his first test. But he practiced, prepared, and was ready. Now, we wait of the results, which they say will be available in 5 weeks.
