CITY OF CAPE TOWN 15 SEPTEMBER 2013 MEDIA RELEASE Intense rainfall over 24 hours affects Cape Peninsula 24 hours of persistent rains results in over 400 persons been waterlogged; roadways flooded, overhead power lines and trees blown down CAPE TOWN – The intense rainfall over a period of 24 hours that occurred since Saturday extending into Sunday caused disruption for many Cape Town residents. The following households were adversely affected: · Gugulethu: One house located at No. 7 NY9 was flooded affected four persons. The Lotus Park informal settlement was waterlogged and the City provided loads of sand to the area. · Khayelitsha: Sixty households were affected in the TR Section, Site B, Khayelitsha that is located in a low-lying area affecting 200 persons. Hot meals and blankets were provided to the victims in the area. In the RR Section, Site B, Khayelitsha, 70 households were also affected whereby 210 people been provided with disaster relief aid. Roads in the flooding areas were flooded due to blockages as a result of illegal dumping of rubble in the stormwater system: Athlone, Bishop Lavis, Bonteheuwel, Brackenfell, Cape Town Central City, Claremont, Eastridge (Mitchell’s Plain), Eerste River, Elsies River, Epping Forest, Goodwood, Gordon’s Bay, Gugulethu, Hazendal (Athlone), Hout Bay, Khayelitsha, Langa, Maitland, Milnerton, Mitchell’s Plain, Mowbray, Newlands, Nyanga, Parow, Phillipi, Pinelands, Retreat, Rondebosch, Stikland Industria, Strand, Strandfontein, Uitsig (Parow), Valhallah Park, Weltevrede Valley (Phillipi), Westridge (Mitchell’s Plain) and in Zeekoevlei. The City appeals to residents not to illegally dump rubble into stormwater systems and in river systems that negatively affect the effective functioning of the infrastructure resulting in flooding of areas. The gale-force wind conditions that prevailed across the Cape Peninsula also affected the supply of electricity where wires were blown down and areas resulting in power outages in the following areas: Athlone, Bellville, Bishop’s Court, Heathfield, Heideveld, Kensington, Kraaifontein, Maitland, Parow, Sarepta, Surrey Estate and Weltevrede Valley (Phillipi). The City’s Electricity Services affected restoration of the supply to the affected areas. Trees and branches were also blown down in the following areas: Aurora (Durbanville); Bergvliet, Constantia, Electric City (Eerste River), Hout Bay, Parow, Plumstead, Retreat and Somerset West. Standby teams from the City Parks Department were activated to clear-up the area and to make the areas safe where free-flow of traffic was affected and whereby trees were endangering the general public and property. The following warning and special weather advisories remains in place for the Cape Peninsula: WARNINGS: 1. Gale force north-westerly wind (65 km/h) is expected between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas. 2. High seas with wave heights between 6 and 8m are expected between Table Bay and Port Alfred. SPECIAL WEATHER ADVISORIES: 1. Strong winds are expected over the central and eastern interior of the Western Cape, western and northern interior of the Eastern Cape as well as the southern interior of the Northern Cape. The SA Weather Service forecast slight to moderate rain that is extending until Friday across the Cape Peninsula. The extended period of precipitation over the coming days will exacerbated the discomfort levels and flood-risk situation on the Cape Flats as the water-table will significantly increase.
