CLIMATE CHANGE TO CAUSE CATARACT LABANGAN ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR,– In the advent of climate change, over exposure of the eyes to the sunlight can cause cataract where some even younger suffered this kind of problem, Doctor of Zamboanga del Sur Medical Society said Monday. Eyes, Ears, Nose and Tongue (EENT) Specialist Edgar Legaspi of the Zamboanga del Sur Medical Society one of the medical volunteers said the climate change develops, intense of the sunlight enters into the earth where the eyes are exposed will suffer the problems of Cataract. He added that normally the cataract would be experienced by aged persons, but now appeared some even younger’s having suffered the same. He advised some youths not to be overly exposed the eyes to the sunlight, or when go outside with the said intensity, it needs protector from the ultraviolet race. Bel Yenko, President of the Project Brotherhood Operation for Saving Sight (Project B.O.S.S) of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity and Sorority of Southern Zamboanga Alumni Association who initiated the eyes cataract operation said in an interview that 50 operated for cataract while 30 operated for Pterygium eye disease, the eyes look red and bloodshot where there are some younger ages. The Operation was in partnership with the 1st Infantry “TABAK” Division of the Philippine Army based in Kuta Sang-an who offered their hospital facilities which supported by volunteer doctors together with the Mabuhay Deseret Foundation Doctors and Nurses based in Davao City, Association of Surgeons and Anaesthesiologist of Pagadian and Zamboanga del Sur Medical Society. Yenko said the operation for every patient would cost about 30-50 thousand pesos, but it has been given free to the patient for them to have new hope in life from the blindness due to cataract, where Dr. Legaspi described the operation will last about 30 minutes depend upon the patient’s cooperation. Retired Teacher Constancia Lagui from Pagadian said the activity was a big help for them that they could not already afford that kind of operation. Her daughter and husband likewise undergone the operation that would cost about 150,000 pesos but through this initiative it was given free to them. A “Guso” farmer in Pagadian Rolando Bongcawil felt glad and express gratitude to the project boss who initiated the activities that it helps them so much. During the culmination program, BGen Felicito Virgilio M Trinidad Jr, Acting Division Commander, thanked the partner agencies who had made the activity successful by saying; “We find this Project Brotherhood Operation Saving Sight (BOSS) a rewarding experience that changing their fights from gun towards the enemy of the state but now against cataract Yenko said that they are envisioned to replicate this kind of project to some places, but logistics and resources are needed where helps and volunteerism spirit presented for the achievement of the operation.
