COACH OF THE YEAR..WHO ELSE BUT TIM CONE shar.es/1nEeuA via @inquirerdotnet - SanMig Represents After steering San Mig Coffee to a Grand Slam season, coach Tim Cone gets the ultimate reward for a job well done as he will be honored with the Coach of the Year trophy during the 2014 PBA Press Corps Annual Awards Night Thursday at the Richmonde Hotel in Eastwood City in Quezon City. The Coach of the Year honor is the third for Cone – including the 1996 season – as he became the first man to win the Grand Slam twice as a mentor. The trophy is named after the legendary Virgilio `Baby’ Dalupan, the winningest coach in league history until Cone surpassed him in last year’s All-Filipino conference when the 56-year-old American won his 16th title. The American mentor now leads the league in championships won with 18. PBA Press Corps President Barry Pascua of Bandera will lead the celebration of the achievers in the 39th season of the PBA, as cage greats Atoy Co, Bogs Adornado, Ato Agustin and Jojo Lastimosa, all of whom are members of Grand Slam teams from different eras, serve as guests of honor who will lead in toasting all of the awardees during the formal affair backed by the PBA, Alaska, Barangay Ginebra, San Miguel, Barako Bull, Blackwater Sports, Globalport, Kia Motors, Meralco, NLEX, Rain or Shine, San Mig Super Coffee, and Talk `N Text. Sharing the limelight with Cone during the event which has the theme ‘There Are Champions…and There Are Grand Slam Champions’! is San Miguel Corp. president and chief operating officer Ramon S. Ang, who will be the recipient of the Executive of the Year award named after the late Danny Floro, legendary owner of two-time Grand Slam champion Crispa Redmanizers. Other awardees during the proceedings first held in 1993 include Marc Pingris as Defensive Player of the Year, along with San Mig Coffee teammates Peter June Simon and Mark Barroca, who are the recipient of the Quality Minutes and Order of Merit awards, respectively. Veteran Asi Taulava is the Comeback Player of the Year, Jayson Castro is the Scoring Champion, while the All-Rookie Team includes Greg Slaughter, Ian Sangalang, Justin Melton, Terrence Romeo, and Raymond Almazan. Also to be recognized during the event are the winners of the last PBAPC Sportswriting Contest. (RL)
